Research Park Funding Bill Introduced in Senate
Federal funding for research and science park development and expansion is the focus of a new bill introduced in the U.S. Senate May 11 by Senator Mark Pryor (D-AR). The "Building a Stronger America Act," if passed, will authorize a federal grant program to be funded in the amount of $7.5 million per year (subject to appropriation), for the development of feasibility studies and plans for the construction or expansion of research parks. The legislation would also guarantee loans between $10 million and $50 million for building new parks and upgrading existing research and science park infrastructure.
"This important legislation will enhance U.S. competitiveness by improving the support for research parks, which are a vital component of the innovation process," AURP President Austin Beggs said. "This bill will allow communities to create and expand places where technology commercialization can thrive, creating new businesses, and new industries."
AURP members are encouraged to individually contact their U.S. senators to express support for this legislation. "We urge you to call or email your senators and let them know of your support for this legislation, and how it enables your park to support economic development in your state," said Eileen Walker, AURP Program Director.
