John A. Adams, President, CEO
Enterprise Florida, Inc.

John Adams serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of Enterprise Florida (EFI) - the public-private partnership responsible for leading Florida's statewide economic development efforts. EFI's mission is to diversify Florida's economy and create better-paying jobs for its citizens by supporting, attracting and helping to create businesses in innovative, high-growth industries. Since joining EFI in November 2005, Dr. Adams has outlined bold objectives for advancing EFI's mission, including aggressively pursuing "The Roadmap to Florida's Future," the statewide strategic plan for further diversifying Florida's economy. He also seeks to enhance the organization's private-sector investment and partnerships with business and economic development organizations throughout Florida. Dr. Adams earned Ph.D., MA and BA degrees from Texas A&M University completed the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at SMU with honors and holds Certified Economic Developer (CED) credentials. He served as Captain in the United States Air Force.

 

Clara Asmail, SBIR Program Manager, Technology Marketing Program Manager
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)

Clara Asmail has managed the NIST SBIR Program since 2001. She is also responsible for marketing NIST technologies and identifying appropriate partners for collaborations and licensing opportunities. In her roles, she proposed and launched an innovative Technology Transfer program facilitating the transfer of federal technology to industry by leveraging the NIST SBIR Program as seed funding along with access to federal research assets. Prior to her current assignments, she was a CRADA and Licensing Officer at NIST where she executed several licenses, more than 50 CRADAs and conducted more than 30 commercialization assessments on inventions disclosed from the NIST Labs. From 1988 to 1998, Ms. Asmail was Project Leader for Optical Scatterometry research in the Physics Laboratory in NIST. She published 19 peer-reviewed articles and established BRDF competency at NIST. She was actively involved in standards committees work in her area of research cooperating with Sematech, ASTM, ISO and other federal agencies. She is an inventor for a technique that allows for the differentiation of optical scattering from microrough surfaces as distinguished from superficial particulates. That patent has been licensed exclusively by NIST to a commercial manufacturer of surface inspection systems. Ms. Asmail holds two M.S. degrees, one in Optical Sciences from the University of Arizona (1988) and one in Physics from Tulane University (1986). Her B.S. in Physics is from Fordham University (1984).

 

Dr. Jean-Francois Balducchi, Managing Director

Since September 2006, Dr. Jean-Francois Balducchi has served as Managing Director of Atlanpole. He is a Board Member of the International Association of Science Parks since 2006. Previously, he held of the position of President of the European Business Innovation Centre Network (EBN) and of Retis, the French Innovation network. Dr. Balducchi received his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Ecole Centrale de Paris.

 

Austin Beggs

After graduating from the University of Saskatchewan with his Bachelor of Arts in 1974, Mr. Beggs joined the University of Saskatchewan, first as Special Assistant to the President, then as the University Space Manager under the Vice President, Academic, and later as part of Physical Plant. In 1980, he joined the Saskatchewan Economic Development Corporation to commence operations of Innovation Place. He moved to British Columbia, and was employed by the Ministry of Environment in Victoria from 1982 to 1986. He returned to Saskatoon in 1986 and is now the Director of Corporate Relations for Innovation Place, the research and development parks system in Saskatchewan. He was acting General Manager of the Regina Research Park, from March of 1999 to May of 2000. Mr. Beggs currently serves as the Association of University Research Parks Immediate Past President and is a member of the International Association of Science Parks, located in Malaga, Spain.

 

H. Jay Bellwoar

Jay Bellwoar has worked as an investment banker specializing in higher education finance since 1986. Prior to that time, Mr. Bellwoar worked as a bond lawyer at a national law firm. As an investment banker and attorney, he has worked on the full range of tax-exempt financings specializing in higher education bond issues. He has served as the senior investment banker to numerous educational institutions throughout the United States on many billions of dollars of projects. Mr. Bellwoar graduated with a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and a B.A. from Georgetown University. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association and the National Association of Bond Lawyers, and is a subscriber to the National Association of College and University Business Officers.

 

Gerard Bonnes, Ph.D.

Dr. Gérard Bonnes is a specialist in innovation. Since 1999, he has served as Vice President at CICOM Organization, Director of European Projects within the Business & Innovation Center of the Sophia Antipolis Science Park. Directly involved in several Innovation Projects of the European Commission, Enterprise & Industry Directorate General, Dr. Bonnes has a broad experience of internationalisation of small innovative firms, leading the EurOffice Services - EOS initiative, www.euroffice-services.eu. He has created his own start-ups after having developed engineering, telecommunications and management capabilities in large multi-national projects, within IBM and in multi-cultural environment within several associations and forums all over the world. After his Engineer diploma in French Ecole d'Ingénieurs Arts & Métiers, Dr. Bonnes granted his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics at Laval University, Quebec and spent more than 20 years at IBM Europe, in a variety of positions, from product development and test to marketing and sales support including world wide interface with IBM corporate research for IBM Europe, twenty of them in management positions.

Nolan Browne
Managing Director
Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy Systems

Nolan Browne was appointed Managing Director of the CSE in February 2008. He has previously worked for Massachusetts-based Evergreen Solar, where he was responsible for developing business relationships around Evergreen's advanced module efforts. In this capacity, he successfully sourced three major polysilicon deals and played an instrumental role in siting Evergreen's largest integrated solar module factory in North America. Prior to this, Browne served as a senior associate at Cambridge Energy Research Associates, where he started up CERA's Clean Energy Study. As a student at MIT's Sloan School of Management, he founded the MIT Energy Conference and was involved with a number of MIT energy startups, including GreenFuel Technologies. As an entrepreneur, Browne has founded two successful for-profit companies to date. He holds an MA and BA in International Economics from Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and an MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

 

Steven G. Copenhagen, LEED®, Principal

A national authority in laboratory planning and design, Steven G. Copenhagen, LEED®, combines his scientific knowledge with an in-depth understanding of state-of-the-art laboratory functions-enabling him to interpret user requirements, develop innovative conceptual plans, and design cutting-edge facility environments. His management and communication skills encourage collaborative team building that result in client-focused projects that meet technical, operational and institutional goals. A frequent speaker at national laboratory conferences, Copenhagen's articles on laboratory planning have appeared in leading professional journals. He is a three-time winner of R&D Magazine's prestigious "Lab of the Year" award, with the California Institute of Technology Kavli Nanoscience Institute, the most recent.

 

Matthew E. Crow, Deputy Assistant Secretary for External Affairs and Communications
U.S. Department of Commerce, Economic Development Administration

Matthew E. Crow is the Economic Development Administration's (EDA) Deputy Assistant Secretary for External Affairs and Communications at the U.S. Department of Commerce. At EDA, Mr. Crow oversees public affairs and congressional relations and is a senior advisor to Assistant Secretary Sandy K. Baruah. Mr. Crow is the executive producer of EDA's nationally televised program "Economic Development Today". He also serves as a member of the Secretary of Labor Chao's Advisory Committee on Apprenticeship that advises the federal government on issues related to the National Apprenticeship Act. He has testified before the United States Senate Committee on Indian Affairs. Mr. Crow has worked in two previous Presidential administrations in public affairs and congressional relations capacities. His private sector experience includes leading the government relations office for the world famous health care philanthropy Project HOPE and as a Senior Account Manager with the national public relations firm of Quinn, Brein & McCarthy. Mr. Crow attended the University of Nevada and studied print journalism. He was editor of the Nevada Review, and was a staff reporter for the University of Nevada's newspaper, Sagebrush.

 

Brian Darmody

Special Assistant Vice Chancellor for Technology Development
University System of Maryland

Brian Darmody serves as university legal counsel and assistant to the president and director of federal and state government relations. Projects led by Mr. Darmody include organizing the university's first technology transfer office, authoring reforms to the state's public/private ethics legislation for university professors, successfully lobbying for the university's high-technology incubator facility, creating the legislation that formed the Maryland Technology Development Corporation (TEDCO), a state technology development organization, and creating RPM (Research Parks Maryland), the nation's first statewide organization of university-affiliated research parks. Mr. Darmody previously served as a staff member for the U.S. House of Representatives, the Maryland General Assembly in Annapolis, Maryland, and in the Office of Attorney-Advisor, U.S. Health Care Financing Administration. In his role with the University System of Maryland he focuses on improving technology transfer across the University System of Maryland and representing higher education regarding BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure Commission) recommendations affecting federal facilities in Maryland and the region, among other duties. He serves on numerous local and national boards, including the Association of University Research Parks and was 2007-2008 Chair of the University of Maryland Network of Entrepreneurs. He holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Baltimore and an undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland, College Park.

 

David L. Day, Director, Office of Technology Licensing

David L. Day joined the Office of Technology Licensing at the University of Florida as Director in April 2001, where he oversees the commercialization efforts of all UF technologies. Mr. Day also serves as Director of the Sid Martin Biotechnology Development Incubator in Alachua, FL, since 2003. Mr. Day serves on the Board of Directors of BioFlorida, the McKnight Brain Institute Advisory Panel, the Board of Directors Executive Committee of the Florida Research Consortium, and the board of Directors Executive Committee of the Southeastern Bio Investors Forum. Mr. Day received a Master of Business Administration from the University of Alabama in 1987 and has a Masters of Library and Information Studies from the University of Alabama, 1977.

 

Gregory W. Deason

Greg Deason leads a Purdue University-affiliated team that is transforming the Purdue Research Park in West Lafayette into an engine for Indiana's economic development initiatives. As Vice President, Greg is also the Director of the Purdue Research Park and has broad responsibilities related to a diverse portfolio of real estate. Greg is leading statewide efforts to build research parks and incubators throughout Indiana. This includes developments in Northwest Indiana (near Chicago), Southeast Indiana (near Louisville) and Indianapolis. Greg is involved in several technology parks throughout the state of Indiana as well as the Indiana Business Incubation Society. Under his leadership, the Purdue Research Park was recognized by AURP as the Outstanding Science/Research Park in 2004, and for the Excellence in Technology Transfer Award in 2005. Greg serves on the board of the Association of University Research Parks and is an Executive Committee Member (1st Vice President) and participates in numerous community and civic activities.

 

Matthew K. Enstice, Executive Director

Matthew Enstice is Executive Director of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC). He has been with the BNMC since its creation in 2001, when he assumed a leadership position. At the time, Mr. Enstice was a consultant with Niagara Consulting Group, a Western New York firm with a focus on urban planning and healthcare. Before that, through his position with Niagara Falls Redevelopment LLC, he managed the Fixed Base Operations at the Niagara Falls International Airport, and oversaw the Niagara Falls Civic and Convention Center. Mr. Enstice holds a B.A. in English from Hobart College and a Master of Business Administration from Canisius College.

 

Nancy C. Floyd, Founder and Managing Director
Nth Power, LLC

Nancy Floyd has led Nth Power's investments in Silicon Energy (Nasdaq: ITRI), Northern Power (Nasdaq: DESC), Smartsynch, Serveron, SpectraSensors and Propel Biofuels. In addition to these Boards, Ms. Floyd sits on the boards of ACORE (American Council on Renewable Energy) and the Center for Resource Solutions. She has been an advisor to the National Renewable Energy Lab, was a board member of Sustainable Asset Management in Zurich, Switzerland and is an active member of E2. She also helped organize the Northwest Business Leaders for Clean Energy campaign and was also appointed by Governor Ted Kulongoski to serve on the Oregon Economic and Community Development Commission.

Prior to founding Nth Power, Ms. Floyd built, managed and negotiated the sale of two high-growth energy and telecommunications companies. In 1982, she founded NFC Energy Corporation, one of the country's first wind development firms utilizing advanced technology developed by NASA and Sandia Labs. She developed over $30 million in projects and sold the company, generating a 25-fold return on the original capital invested in three years. In 1985, she helped found PacTel Spectrum Services, a network management company for private voice and data networks and a subsidiary of Pacific Telesis. Ms. Floyd was responsible for the nationwide launch of Spectrum Services, which was ultimately sold to IBM in 1987. In 1977-1980, Ms. Floyd worked for the Chairman of the Vermont Public Utilities Commission where she worked on energy and telecommunications issues as well as served as the Commission's chief legislative liaison. She sat on the New England Regional Facility Siting Council and founded one of the first non-profit companies in the U.S. to fund home energy audits. Ms. Floyd holds a masters degree in political science from Rutgers University (1977), where she was an Eagleton Fellow. She received a bachelor's degree in political science from Franklin and Marshall College (1976), where she currently serves as a Trustee.

 

Daniel S. Fogel, Associate Dean and Executive Professor of Strategy

Daniel Fogel is also chairman and Founder of EcoLens, a firm that helps university research parks to adopt a sustainability strategy. Dr. Fogel received a BA from The Pennsylvania State University, State College in International Economics in 1971, an MS from The Pennsylvania State University, State College in Psycholinguistics in 1973, and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in Behavioral Studies in 1976.

 

Jeff French, FAIA, Principal

Jeff French is a Principal at Ballinger where his primary concentration is advancing the responsiveness of science and research facilities to the rapidly developing needs of the scientific endeavor. His contribution to architecture for science has been recognized by his elevation in the American Institute of Architects. He has served as a grant panelist for the National Foundation and lectured for organizations such as the Association of American Colleges, the Food and Drug Administration, and the New York Academy of Sciences. Mr. French has co-authored the National Science Foundation's guidebook on academic research planning. His recent work includes prestigious academic and corporate institutions throughout the U.S. and abroad.

 

Murray Guy, MBA, P. Eng., LEED™President
Integrated Designs INC.

Murray Guy is President of Integrated Designs a project management firm that specializes in delivering high performance building projects. IDI has been a pioneer in developing the Saskatchewan sustainable building industry and are leaders in providing project management, design facilitation, LEED certification, energy modeling and commissioning for sustainable high performance buildings.

Integrated Designs have adopted "Integrated Project Delivery" as their preferred process for delivering high performance building and are currently working on delivering a LEED Platinum project for "No Additional Capital Cost". Integrated Design has also developed an industry leading LEED +++ Project Commissioning system and is providing commissioning for world-class facilities like the $250M Manitoba Hydro Corporate Office building.

 

William Hartman, Ph.D.

Fraunhofer USA, Inc.

William F. Hartman is Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Fraunhofer USA, Inc., in Plymouth, Michigan. Fraunhofer USA, which is a subsidiary of the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, operates through technology centers that are partnered with major research universities in the United States and also with parent research institutes in Germany. Dr. Hartman is responsible for managing the business of the corporation, including guiding and promoting the strategic development and growth of the Fraunhofer Centers in the U.S., and fostering expanded cooperation between the Fraunhofer Institutes in Germany and academic, state, federal, and industrial partners in the U.S. Dr. Hartman earned his Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins University, where he later served as Assistant Professor of Mechanics and Materials Science. He has extensive experience in the development and management of technological businesses. As a corporate executive and director of several high-tech companies, he held lead roles in start-ups, development of funded research, acquisitions, strategic planning, relationships with universities and research institutes, intellectual property protection, technology transfer, and the organization and direction of foreign subsidiaries. In addition to his responsibilities at Fraunhofer USA, Dr. Hartman is Adjunct Professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering at Michigan State University. He serves on the Delaware Science and Technology Council; and is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of InB Biotechnologies, Inc. He is the author of more than 50 technical publications and an author of five patents.

 

Karen A. Holbrook, Ph.D.
Vice President for Research and Innovation
University of South Florida

Karen A. Holbrook, Ph.D., served as president of The Ohio State University for five years and is currently Vice President for Research and Innovation at the University of South Florida and a member of the Washington Advisory Group (WAG). Before becoming president of Ohio State in 2002, Dr. Holbrook was senior vice president for academic affairs and provost at the University of Georgia. Prior to that, Dr. Holbrook was vice president for research and dean of the Graduate School at the University of Florida, and associate dean for research and professor of biological structure and medicine at the University of Washington, School of Medicine. Dr. Holbrook has served on the boards of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Association of American Medical Colleges, the American Council of Education, the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges, and the Association of American Universities, among others. She participates on numerous advisory panels and councils for the National Institutes of Health, including the NIH Blue Ribbon Panel for the National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratory, Boston, and is presently a member of the Advisory Committee to the Director of the NIH. Dr. Holbrook has had a productive research career in the biomedical sciences and was a MERIT Award recipient from the NIH. She earned bachelor's and master's degrees in zoology at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, a doctorate in biological structure at the University of Washington, School of Medicine where she also served as a postdoctoral fellow in dermatology and a faculty member.

 

Punit K. Jain, LEED®
Cannon Design

Punit K. Jain, LEED®, a graduate of Washington University with a Masters in Architecture and Construction Management, has been involved in a variety of project types and project roles. He is a key member of Cannon Design's Science & Technology practice, with extensive experience in laboratory architecture. Mr. Jain serves as Cannon Design's sustainable design leader, responsible for promoting high-performance design through LEED® accreditation, conducting training for the firm's professionals, and championing sustainable design practices. Validating this commitment, Mr. Jain was appointed to the National Board of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC)-the originator of the LEED® system, and widely recognized as one of the most influential institutions in the sustainable movement worldwide. A Rotary Foundation Scholar, Mr. Jain has taught at the School of Art & Design at Maryville University and St. Louis Community College and serves as a visiting critic for the schools of architecture at Washington University and the University of Illinois at Champaign, Urbana. He is a frequent presenter at major industry forums including Labs 21, the Sierra Club, the Missouri Biotechnology Association, as well as the USGBC, where he also served as President of its St. Louis Chapter.

 

Peter Marsh, Vice President

Peter Marsh is a co-owner of Workplace Strategies Inc., a North Carolina-based commercial design firm specializing in advanced workplace design and facility planning. Founded in February 2000 by his partner Alicia Hardin, the firm focuses on holistic design, business strategy, and measurable results. They design buildings from the inside-out. Their current portfolio of work includes projects in the Corporate, Medical, Professional, Educational, Governmental, and Non-Profit sectors. Peter is also President and Founder of EcoLens, a firm that helps university research parks to adopt a sustainability strategy.

 

Keith Mock, AIA, Principal

A Principal at Ballinger, Keith Mock has 30 years experience in planning, design and project management and leads the firm's research park and commercial office studio. A broad range of large-scale mixed-use developments and technically complex building types enables him to leverage a broad perspective of project objectives to meet each client's particular project goals. His most recent accomplishments include completion of the Camden, NJ Waterfront Technology Center 750,000 SF Master Plan and the first phase of development, a 100,000 SF multi-tenant research incubator for New Jersey Economic Development Authority; and a 2.7M SF Master Plan of the Harriman Research + Technology Park in Albany, NY.

 

Dr. Thaddeus Seymour, Jr., Vice President & General Manager, Health & Life Science Investments

Dr. Thaddeus Seymour leads strategic planning and business development for Lake Nona's burgeoning 600-acre Science & Technology Park. This emerging "medical city" represents a unique opportunity to build a planned health and life sciences cluster. Dr. Seymous's role includes the supervision of all life science planning, new business ventures and corporate recruitment. He is a 15-year veteran of the healthcare industry, a founding board member of 'bio Orlando' and serves on the board of Florida's Blood Centers.

 

Gary C. Shaw, AIA Leed AP, Principal

Gary Shaw is a regional practice leader in Perkins+Will's Science & Technology sector. He brings together his engineering, architectural and life sciences education to offer a unique skill set to academic research and development clients as they work together to innovate new concepts for research facilities and research parks that address evolving interdisciplinary science and academic / commercial research collaborations. Mr. Shaw has previously presented topics to the AURP community including the history and development of Boston's 'biotech cluster', research park planning and innovations in high-rise, multi-tenant spec lab building design.

 

John G. Voeller, ASME White House Fellow

John Voeller is a member of the corporate management team at Black & Veatch and is responsible for visioning strategic technology directions. In October 2003, he took a year off to accept an ASME Fellowship in the Office of Science and Technology Policy for the executive office of the President and has been asked to continue this work under contract through the ASME ITI, LLC for clients such as DHS, OSTP, DARPA and several Washington firms. He is the principal architect of POWRTRAK, the automated engineering system of Black & Veatch that was used to build over 500 power facilities around the world. Mr. Voeller also serves as CEO and president of Data Discovery, Inc., which sells his recursive, search technology; CEO and president of General Integration Corp., specializing in highly collaborative environments; and CEO and president of Nuhands Corp., a firm specializing in products for aiding senior citizens and the handicapped. Mr. Voeller has been the technical leader of the Chemical, Biological, Radiological Technology Alliance (CBRTA), working on advanced technology to deal with terrorist threats with 13 companies including Honeywell, 3M, Motorola, Lucent, General Dynamics, Johns Hopkins, Mayo Clinic, Veridian, Cargill, Becton Dickinson, Syracuse Research Corp. and RAE. He has received many awards and recognitions, including the CIO Enterprise Value Award for 1997 from CIO magazine; the Award of Excellence from Engineering News Record magazine for 1998, "Their Highest Honor For Most Significant Individual Achievement In the Construction Industry"; the Ed Forrest Award For Highest Achievement in Engineering Automation for 2000; and the CIO Premier 100 Award as one of the top 100 CIOs in the US for 2000. Voeller holds a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and is a registered professional engineer in the states of Kansas and Michigan.

 

Dr. Lorel E. Wisniewski, Deputy Director, Director's Office, Technology Innovation Program
National Institute of Standards and Technology

Dr. Lorel Wisniewski currently serves as Deputy Director for TIP. She was Deputy Director of the Advanced Technology Program (ATP) at NIST from 2005 through 2007. Dr. Wisniewski joined ATP as Supervisory Economist in the ATP Economic Assessment Office in December 2003. Before joining NIST, Dr. Wisniewski spent over ten years as Principal with an economic consulting firm in Washington, D.C., and previously managed compensation for a large HMO. She spent three years as staff economist and manager of the statistical department for a trade association in the electric power industry, and spent nearly ten years conducting economic analysis in the telecommunications industry. Dr. Wisniewski has taught economics at American University and Trinity College. Her career began as a Federal Junior Fellow at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Dr. Wisniewski earned a Ph.D. in economics from American University in 1999. She also has an M.A. in economics from George Washington University and a B.A. in economics from Franklin & Marshall College.

Bill Zondler provides strategic direction and infrastructure architecture for Burnham Institute's information technology and facilities in support of both the California and Orlando campuses. The new Orlando site will focus on diabetes and obesity research and will expand the Institute's drug discovery program and compound screening capabilities. Mr. Zondler is charged with oversight responsibility for the entire development of both the physical and technology infrastructure for the Orlando campus.
