Managing the Change to Green…Your Park's Sustainable Future

Sustainability. This stuff works!

Make your tenants happier. Make your stakeholders proud of you. Become a leader. Save money. What does green mean? And what does it mean to you? LEED and all that? Who does it apply to? Is it just for new buildings? How do I get certified? Should I? It's about balancing, costs, client needs, operational versus capital, and how to find a fit.

Everywhere one turns, companies are discussing how to adopt principles and practices related to environmental sustainability. University parks are no exception. The greening of parks refers to the adoption of environmental principles and practices to build-out and operate parks. Sustainability is a reference to the outcome of this green activity, creating a park that is long-lasting and competitive. This session will cover the basics of how parks can adopt sustainability principles and practices and provide time for participants to explore how to make individual parks greener. The session topics include definitions of terms, incorporating "green" into business practices and strategy, important processes, and making the business case for green. This session will include specific information on tax credits and specific case studies of what parks and similar developments are accomplishing with going green. Participants will receive extensive summaries of existing literature and practices for going green.

This year's Research Parks 201 session will be a combination of Roundtable Discussion and speaker led forums.

The planned agenda is as follows:

7:00 am - 8:00 am Breakfast
Welcome and Introductions
8:00 am - 10:00 am Sustainability and your park.
Speaker led discussion session
What does this approach to the park mean to the success of a park?
We will address three topics related to going green in university research parks. Green is a set of guidelines and principles that contribute to creating a sustainable environment.

We will discuss:

  • an effective format for understanding the business case for green
  • assess the costs and benefits of a comprehensive approach to sustainability for a university research park
  • compare and contrast various guidelines and analyses such as greenhouse gas emissions analysis, energy audits, and guidelines for the built environment for being green especially LEED-ND, BREEAM, BOMA-Go Green, and LABS 21.
  • discuss how to achieve green goals, including covenants and organization-level activities.

Panelists will illustrate their points with case studies.

10:00 am - 10:15 am Bio Break
10:15 am - 11:45 am Integrated Design. It's not just about new.
How do you, as a park manager, take control of the issue of sustainability? What does LEED mean to you? Does it cost or does it pay?
This session is intended to be an open discussion.
Through case studies of selected laboratory buildings, the presenters will demonstrate integrated architectural and engineering methodology to analyze, design, construct, and operate laboratory buildings to produce environmentally responsible, cost effective and healthy places to work. All projects are pursuing LEED® certification. LEED® Certification has become a widely accepted benchmark to design sustainable research buildings. This presentation will address LEED® certification as it relates to the research buildings addressed in the presentation.

Session Objectives:

  • Learn why we should build sustainable research buildings.
  • Learn how to implement a true sustainable building.
  • Learn how to measure the costs and benefits of sustainable strategies.

Come away a better manager and know what it means to green your park, every day.

11:45 am - 12:00 pm Wrap-Up discussions
12:30 pm - 12:45 pm Shuttle to Vinoy Golf Course
1:00 pm - 5:45 pm Green Conversations… Golf at Vinoy Golf Course.
